The in vivo zebrafish model a popular tool for investigation in science.
As explained in previous publications, zebrafish have become a powerful vertebrate model in science due to its multiple advantages. Today the focus is on the study of infectious diseases caused by human and animal pathogens. The zebrafish in vivo model can be apply in those infectious deseases as there is high conservation between human and zebrafish immune systems (innate and adaptive), what allows us to study host-pathogen interactions.
The aim of this model is to reproduce infectious diseases in zebrafish to test toxicity and efficacy, of new vaccination in early stages of development of new vaccine.

Each assay will follow the next steps:
As showed in above scheme, the first step is the administration of the vaccine to be tested at the required dose. The vaccination period will be subject to the compound to be tested, as well as the dose. Once the vaccination period is over, the next step will be to cause infection with the target bacterial strain. After infection is completed, Ikan Biotech will proceed to monitor the animals and within a week of inducing the infection, we euthanize them.
After this, the following variables will be analyzed:
- Gene expression: RT-PCR assay will be carried out to analyze the expression levels of different genes involved in the immune response of the zebrafish against the infection caused.
- Survival study: assess survival during bacteria infection, comparing control and vaccinated groups.

The objetive of these zebrafish model is to provide information about the efficacy of the target studied vaccine to select the most promising candidate (screening) and guide our customer’s decision wether continue with next discovery phase
