The world health organization (WHO) warns about OBESITY or overweight, a disease that has not only been emerging for years in developed societies with high incomes, but also in those with medium and low incomes. This disease takes the lives of approximately 2.8 million people a year, a chilling fact and to which governments, civil society, NGOs and the private sector have to contend with and play a crucial role in preventing obesity.
Several studies have come to the conclusion that obesity helps to develop certain diseases. The main diseases associated with obesity, called co-morbidities, are diabetes type II, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia (high blood cholesterol levels), vascular and coronary diseases and fatty liver. Obesity is also associated with an increase of up to 50% in the chances of developing any type of cancer, but especially of cancers of the breast, ovary, colon, liver, pancreas, stomach, and kidney.
Finally, we should not forget the psychological problems (anxiety, depression, eating disorders) that many obese patients suffer. As well as decreasing life expectancy.
These are the reasons that have led Ikan Biotech to establish a model of obese zebrafish in adults fishes. The aim of this model is to be able to carry out studies of food supplements, diets, treatments as well as the possibility of being able to compare the observed effects of the test substance among the obese group with the normal group.
The results that can be shown are visual observations, length and weight measurements, histological analysis as well as the expression of different genes using RT-PCR.
